What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup warm almond milk or oat milk

  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 3 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon plain unsweetened yogurt (only if using gluten-free flour)
  • 2 ⅔ cups all-purpose flour
    OR
2 cups gluten-free all-purpose flour (we recommend King Arthur Measure for Measure)

Strawberry Filling

  • ⅓ cup softened regular or vegan butter
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 cups sliced strawberries

Cream Cheese Icing

  • 2 tablespoons softened regular or vegan butter
  • 2 ounces regular or vegan cream cheese
  • ¾ cup confectioners sugar

How To Make Strawberry Sweet Rolls

Prepare Yeasted Dough: Begin by combining warm almond or oat milk, melted regular or vegan butter, and maple syrup. Activate the yeast by sprinkling it over the mixture and allowing it to sit for 10 minutes.

Preparing The Dough

Mix Dough: Incorporate the all-purpose flour into the mixture until a dough forms. For gluten-free flour, add non-dairy yogurt to enhance elasticity. Allow the dough to rise for an hour in a warm environment. I like to use my oven top or place the dough near a window so the sunlight can hit it.

Roll and Fill Dough: Roll out the risen dough into an oval or rectangle. Spread softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle sugar and sliced strawberries evenly. Use a pizza cutter to cut the rolls into long strips (see photos). Roll each strip into a pinwheel, place them in a baking dish, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

Bake and Frost: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 35 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the cream cheese frosting by mixing softened butter, cream cheese, and confectioners sugar. Once cooled, spread the frosting over the rolls.

How To Make Strawberry Sweet Rolls With No Yeast

Ingredients
¾ cup almond milk or oat milk
½ cup melted regular or vegan butter
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
2 cups all-purpose flour OR 2 cups gluten-free all-purpose flour (we recommend King Arthur Measure for Measure)
1 tablespoon plain unsweetened yogurt (only if using gluten-free flour)
6 tablespoons softened regular or vegan butter
½ cup sugar
2 cups sliced strawberries
2 tablespoons softened regular or vegan butter
2 ounces regular or vegan cream cheese
¾ cup powdered sugar

Instructions
Step 1:
Preheat the oven to 400°F.
Step 2: In a large bowl, mix together the almond or oat milk, melted butter, and baking powder. Add the flour and mix until a thick dough forms. If using gluten-free flour, mix in the yogurt to help improve the texture of the dough.
Step 3: Roll the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle with sugar and evenly distribute the diced strawberries on top. Use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into long strips and then roll each strip into a pinwheel.
Step 4: Place the unbaked strawberry rolls into a greased baking dish and bake for 20 minutes. Optional: Broil for 1–2 minutes for a more golden top.
Meanwhile, prepare the cream cheese icing by mixing together the softened butter, cream cheese, and confectioners sugar until smooth and creamy.
Allow the rolls to cool slightly before frosting. Serve and enjoy!

Easy Strawberry Rolls Recipe

  • Prepare the dough by mixing the warm almond milk, melted vegan butter, and maple syrup. Sprinkle the active dry yeast evenly across the top of the mixture, stir gently, and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
  • Add the flour and mix until a dough forms. If using gluten free flour, add the non-dairy yogurt into the bowl and use your hands to work it into the dough. This will help the gluten free dough be more elastic and hold together better during rolling. If you are using regular flour, you don't need to add yogurt to the dough.
  • Form the dough into a round mound and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel. Allow it to sit for an hour. I like to sit my bowl on top of an oven preheated to 350. The warmth from the oven helps the dough rise faster. Note, if using gluten free all purpose flour, the dough will rise slightly less than the dough containing gluten.
  • After the dough has risen for an hour place it on a floured surface and roll the dough into a ¼ inch oval or rectangle (add more flour if the dough is too sticky to roll). Note, if using gluten-free flour, the dough will be slightly more dry. Spread the softened butter to cover the dough. Top with the sugar and strawberries.
  • Preheat the oven to 350.
  • Use a pizza cutter to cut the rolls into long strips and then roll them into pinwheels. Place the pinwheels into a baking dish so that they are close but not touching. Cover them with a towel or loose plastic wrap and set aside for another 30 minutes. Note, if your rolls are gluten free, they won't be as voluminous as rolls with gluten in them, but they'll be every bit as delicious!
  • Remove plastic wrap and bake the rolls in the oven for about 35-40 minutes.
  • While the rolls are baking, make the vegan cream cheese frosting by using an electric hand mixer to mix together the softened vegan butter, powdered sugar, and vegan cream cheese. Allow the rolls to cool and spread the icing over the rolls. Enjoy!
