How to Make Ahead and Store a PB&J

Making your PB&J ahead of time? Here's how to keep it fresh:

  1. Prepare the sandwich as usual, but create a barrier between the jelly and the bread by spreading peanut butter on both slices before adding jelly. This prevents sogginess.
  2. Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container.
  3. Store at room temperature for up to 6 hours or refrigerate for up to 24 hours.
  4. For longer storage, freeze the sandwich in a freezer-safe bag for up to 1 month. Thaw at room temperature before eating.

How to Choose the Best PB&J Ingredients

Bread

  • Whole Grain or Wheat: Adds flavor and nutrition.
  • White Bread: Soft, classic option.
  • Gluten-Free: Great for dietary needs.

Peanut Butter

  • Creamy: Smooth and easy to spread.
  • Crunchy: Adds texture.
  • Natural: Healthier, minimal additives - for this, we love the brand Once Again.

Jelly

  • Grape Jelly: Classic choice.
  • Strawberry or Raspberry Jam: Sweet and tangy.
  • Low-Sugar or Homemade Preserves: Fresher, healthier.

Extras

  • Honey, banana slices, or a sprinkle of cinnamon can elevate your PB&J into a gourmet treat.

Peanut butter is easily my favorite sandwich filling, and I enjoy pairing it with jelly. To take things further, I like to add both honey and banana slices to my PB&Js, and they are so good.
Two layers of no-stir natural creamy peanut butter (one with a natural stabilizer) holding a layer of raw and unfiltered wildflower honey, a sliced banana on top of the second layer of peanut butter, and natural Concord grape jelly, all brought together between two slices of wide-pan 100% whole wheat bread is my go-to for a perfect homemade PB&J. I’m even eating one right now while I type this. *takes a bite* Mmm, great sandwich!
