Blueberry Waffles Ingredients

This blueberry waffles recipe is made with simple ingredients you probably have in your kitchen right now. Here's everything you'll need:

  • Milk: To keep these dairy free and vegan, use a plant-based milk like unsweetened oat milk or almond milk.
  • Maple syrup: To add natural sweetness to the waffles. You can swap with an equal amount of agave syrup.
  • Vanilla extract: For flavor.
  • Baking powder: To help these rise and get nice and fluffy.
  • Flour: We recommend using all purpose flour, or for gluten-free waffles use King Arthur Measure for Measure flour.
  • Blueberries: Feel free to use fresh or frozen berries for juicy bursts of sweetness in every bite.

How to Make Blueberry Waffles

Step 1: Mix the almond or oat milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and baking powder together. Then, mix in the flour just until it is smooth. Don't over mix or your waffles will be dense.

Step 2: Fold in the fresh or frozen blueberries. Heat your waffle iron to high heat and once it's hot, spray it with non-stick cooking spray. I like to use coconut oil spray.

Step 3: Spoon about 2 to 3 tablespoon of the waffle batter into the hot iron. Cook the waffles for about 2 to 3 minutes until they are crisp and golden. Repeat until all the batter is used.

Expert Tips

  • Frozen or fresh blueberries: I used frozen blueberries in my waffle batter and topped my waffles with frozen blueberries that had been thawed. I find they are more juicy this way! However, fresh berries work great too.
  • Waffle iron: Not all waffle makers work the same way. It's a good idea to read the manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended cooking time.
  • Keep warm: To keep waffles warm while you make the entire batch, place a wire rack on a baking sheet in a 200 degree oven and add the waffles to the wire rack as they finish cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you keep blueberries from sticking to a waffle iron?

Some of the berries may burst while cooking, which could lead to a sticky waffle iron. We recommend greasing the waffle iron generously with non-stick cooking spray, like coconut oil spray, or even vegan butter after cooking each waffle.

Can you overbeat waffle batter?

Yes! You definitely don't want to over mix the batter, as the waffles may turn out dense and rubbery rather than light and fluffy.

How to store blueberry waffles?

Cool completely, then store leftovers in a large zip-top baggie or another airtight container in the fridge for up to about 5 days. To freeze, place cooled waffles into freezer bags individually. Alternatively, place them in a single layer on a lined baking sheet and freeze until solid (about 1-2 hours) and then store stacks in freezer bags. Freeze for up to three months.
